I Love My Kindle! "Rain", by Leigh K Cunningham

"Rain", by Leigh K Cunningham is set in a country town in the eastern states of Australia and spans from the 1960s to present time. It follows the decline of the Wallen family, once wealthy saw mill owners, through three generations. When the uninsured saw mill is burnt down, life takes a downward turn for the family.

This family are so unlucky, and as a reader I was hoping for a little light in this very dark saga. A lot of the characters are unlikeable, or have horrible things happen to them. To me, the most likeable character in the novel dies too early and the unlucky lives of the Wallens are a little hard to to believe, making it even harder to empathise.

I think to novel could be improved with some heavy editing, especially towards the end where the reader is subjected to pretty mediocre writing through Carla's journal and letters.

There is a ray of hope for Carla at the very end of the novel, but by this stage the rest of the characters seem to have been forgotten about. I found "Rain" to be a bleak, hard slog.
