I Love My Kindle! "Before I Go to Sleep" by SJ Watson

"Before I Go to Sleep" is a psychological thriller set in London where 47 year old Christine (Chrissy) Lucas lives with severe amnesia. Each morning she wakes up thinking she is still a young woman, she has no memories of her past, or the passage of time that has brought her to this place, or time. Each morning she looks in shock at her face, as in her mind she is still young and has lost 27 years of her life.

Her husband Ben, patiently explains her past and that she was in a hit a run accident each morning and she grapples each day with this new found knowledge, knowing that when she wakes up the next day she will not remember, again.

"As I sleep, my mind will erase everything I did today. I will wake up tomorrow as I did this morning. Thinking I’m still a child. Thinking I have a whole lifetime of choice ahead of me. . ."

The story is told through Chrissy's secret diary, which her doctor remindeds her to write in each day.  The diary is a secret from her husband with the words "Do not trust Ben" on the first page. As we follow Chrissy's diary we learn that things are not as they seem. She discovers that although Ben tells her they have never had children that she did in fact have a son, Adam, whom Ben tells her has died. We learn that she was not in a hit and run accident, rather she was attacked in a hotel room.

The more that Chrissy writes in and reads her diary, the more she begins to remember. As her memories get stronger, she becomes more independent. She discovers some pages of her diary in Ben's possesion and all of the missing pieces fall into place. The ending is violent and satisfying as Chrissy finally remembers her memories.

A few reviews of this book I read suggest that the plot is implausable with too many convenient coincidences, but I was happy to suspend my disbelief, like you do when you are reading a work of fiction. There have been cases of amnesia where memories are erased overnight, so the premise is actually not too hard to believe. Its a really compelling hard to put down book.
